Who Rides in India – Midi Fairgrieve

In the Who Rides in India section, we hear from riders who have journeyed to India to ride the native breeds on an equestrian vacation.

Midi is an Equine Assisted Therapist who rode with Dundlod Safariโ€™s on the Desert Ride to Alsisar. This is a six day route from Dundlod to the magnificently regal Alsisar Mahal Heritage Hotel.ย

Describe your riding background, Midi

I am an Equine Assisted Therapist, and Iโ€™ve been a leisure rider from childhood, mainly at riding schools, and on holiday with friends. Iโ€™ve owned my own horse for the last 9 years. Mostly I am an intermittent rider and I usually ride bitless.ย

Why did you choose to ride in India?

I chose India as I knew it would be an amazing experience in itself, as Iโ€™ve been to India twice before, but this time to go off the beaten track and experience what it might have been like to travel the old trade routes and stay in former merchants โ€˜havelisโ€™ (mansions) was a real attraction.

Rajasthan has a rich history of art and culture. I was excited about camping en-route, and the whole process of riding through Rajasthan gave us so much insight into local people, wildlife, and generally rural life. It was truly a special experience for me.

How was your experience riding the Marwari breed of horse?

I loved the Marwari horses! I didnโ€™t know much about them before the trek, but I liked the idea that they are an indigenous breed of India, which seemed to be appropriate when riding through the Rajasthan desert.

I found the Marwari breed to be athletic, sensitive, very intelligent, generous and forward going.

How would you describe riding in rural Rajasthan with Dundlod Safaris on an equestrian vacation?

One of the best experiences. To be taken on a trek by Bonnie felt like a real privilege. To have the close contact with him and learn about his family history and to stay in his family home, Dundlod Fort, was a unique experience.

The Dundlod team were amazing, truly professional and we were royally looked after.

More importantly, was how well the horses were looked after. They gave everything through the day, and during the lunch stops and over night were given the best of care.

What sets an equestrian holiday in Rajasthan apart from other destinations?

For me, it was the magic of being immersed in the history of the area and being able to experience the nobility of the Marwari horses all at the same time!

What advice would you give to riders who are keen to come to India to ride the Marwari’s?

Enjoy the whole experience, as it is unforgettable and unique. You donโ€™t need to be an advanced rider to enjoy the horse safari, just a competent rider.

The level of attention to safety by the Dundlod team is very high, and great care is taken to match you to the right horse. You are given time to get to know your horse before the trek starts.

I would definitely love to come back!
